The Loudest Protea In The Room

For the longest time I’ve wanted to learn to sew. When I was a kid, I used to watch my mom make herself head-to-toe work-outfits. But my mom, refused to teach me saying that I had to learn for myself just like she did, so that I truly learn the best tricks. *Eye roll* I tried to sew by hand blouses and such, but they always looked wonky or too obviously handmade. I also tried to use my mom’s sewing machine once… and totally wrecked it haha. After that, I stuck with sewing toys by hand. It was only until this year, that I decided to get my own sewing machine and figure out how to truly make garments. I know it’s not the same, but I’ve always been good at creating packaging templates—making cool boxes and such. I felt like it was essentially the same thing. I started drawing the shapes of dresses, using sometimes examples of my own. The dresses looked OK, however everything always fit wrong… obvs, because I wasn’t measuring anything. After a few attempts, I got it down to making the cutest dress with equally sized sleeves. Naturally, the next step was learning how to make a coat! Enter this crazy, anything but subtle pattern:

I took an old Old Navy coat which hands down love, and traced all the pieces on tracing paper. I gave a little space on each pice for the hems, and then put everything together. The collar and sleeves were the hardest thing to sew, but I think it came out ok? …
